Kern River Surf Co is not just another California clothing brand.

We create shirts, hoodies, and other apparel, as well as art work, inspired by Bakersfield, Kern County, the Kern River, the oilfields, lost local businesses, and the wonderfully questionable history of inland California.

Most California apparel celebrates beaches, palm trees, Hollywood, and famous coastal cities. That is fine, but it leaves out a large part of the state—and many of the people who call it home.

Kern River Surf Co exists for everyone who remembers a different California.

It is a California of farm land, canal banks, oil rigs, neon bar signs, forgotten arcades, local radio stations, old theaters, questionable surf breaks, and stories that may have become slightly more interesting with every retelling.

Apparel With a Story

Nobody truly needs another T-shirt. What people want is something that feels personal.

Our designs are made for people who look at a shirt and immediately say:

Every design has a story behind it, whether that story is documented history, local legend, a false memory, or something we probably should not investigate too carefully.

Many of our designs are part of Lost Bakersfield, a collection inspired by businesses, landmarks, signs, hangouts, and local institutions that have disappeared.

Places close. Buildings are demolished. Signs come down. The people who remember them move away or grow older.

It may remind someone of a favorite bar, an old drilling company, an arcade from their teenage years, a long-gone radio station, or a stretch of the Kern River where there may—or may not—have once been excellent surf.
