Stay Out-Stay Alive!
Gordon's Ferry has long been the crossing point for lost souls travelling between the blight and the light.
We're not saying that Bakersfield is that much brighter than Oildale but if you know the story of Charon and the River Styx you might feel this interpretation of the historic Gordon's Ferry.
Before the dam, before the bridge, and long before the Oildale meth gators developed taste for carne asada fries, there was Gordon’s Ferry. Operating until 1938, it was a noble service — a rope-drawn boat that transported brave (or clueless) souls from the southern banks of Bakersfield to the northern fog of confusion that is Oildale.
Today, that historic crossing is operated — unofficially — by Charon River Industries, a shadowy conglomerate headquartered just beneath the old bridge near Manor Street. Their slogan? “One way. No refunds.”
By day, the bridge is just a shortcut for tire shops and people trying to avoid Chester Avenue. But by night? Locals say if you walk across slowly — real slow — you can still hear the faint twang of a haunted pedal steel guitar echoing from the water below. Others say it’s the souls of long-lost Bakersfield Sound legends, trapped under the bridge for crimes like too much reverb or refusing to play Merle.
