Gary Drilling was once one of those names that didn’t require much explanation around Bakersfield.
You saw the rigs. You knew somebody who worked there. Or somebody in your family worked with somebody who worked there. That’s pretty much how Kern County operates.
Founded in 1954, Gary Drilling Company grew into a substantial Bakersfield-based drilling contractor during the decades when drilling rigs, pumpjacks, service trucks and oilfield yards weren’t scenery around here—they were the local economy.
By 1985, Gary Drilling was drilling on a serious scale. A Los Angeles Times report the following year described the company as a sizable family operation and reported that it had drilled roughly 1,200 wells in 1985.
Then came the familiar ending.
On February 9, 2000, Gary Drilling was acquired by Caza Drilling. Kern County records would later formally identify CAZA Drilling (California) Inc. as the successor to Gary Drilling Company.
The rigs changed names.
The logo disappeared.
Bakersfield kept drilling.
