In the summer of 1984, a group of local high school 4H members were showing their Quarter Horses on a farm near Arvin when fate, horsepower, and a little Kern County ingenuity collided. A truckload of rowdy skurfers on their way to a nearby river spot broke down in the heat. The 4H crew didn’t just offer a tow — they offered their horses. Before long, reins were traded for tow ropes, and boards skimmed the river’s surface behind galloping horsepower.
